Why a Z1000SX

Brrrraaaaappppp

Ok seriously, the reason I have a Kawasaki Z1000SX is that, I can't ride bikes with drop bars for anything longer than an hour, oh the joys of getting old.

Riding this one is pretty much like driving my transit van, without the aircon and coffee cup holders.

Basic Setup

Obviously you need a motorbike, helmet, gloves as some comfortable gear, I prefer textiles over leathers but thats my preference.
If your planning on going far away a bigger bike than a 125cc might be appropriate, but that would also mean having a full bike licence, thats not to say you can't do it on a 125cc, but once loaded up it might be a bit slow.

Dn't forget some sort of luggage setup, the real basics are strap the tent to the back of the bike and fit your backpack, but how far are you travelling and would that make things a little uncomfortable.

Route Planning

Although I am a fan of winging it, planning a trip takes time.
For the time being I use a couple of different navigation apps on my iPhone, Apple maps is good for a short point to point trip.
Sygic has some real advantages as it will import routes with multiple way points.
Then there’s an app called Navigation, this is created by a company called MyRoute-app. They have a very unique way of planning routes than can be exported to multiple satnav devices and apps.

Luggage Setup

When I bought my Z1000SX I opted to have the sports and touring pack.
The touring pack came with panniers, Satnav mount and a cigarette socket on the side of the dash which I have a USB C charger to power my phone.

The Kawasaki panniers aren’t that great, they are only XX litres and designed in such away to make them seem a part of the bike instead of being more practical.

One thing I decided was that I didn’t want to secure the tent and my super comfy chair on the pillion seat, and as I kind of like the Hepco & Beker top box rack, they also make what is called a SportTrac, this replaces the pillion seat with a metal plate with purpose slots for tie down straps.
